Stir well. Using a soft fan brush, apply 1-3 coats to wet clay, pottery or soft-fired, cone 04 bisque (1940°F/1060°C). Allow to dry thoroughly between each coat. If desired, apply 2-3 coats of another glaze over it. Fire to desired temperature; cone 5-10 (2167°F-2345°F / 1186°C-1285°C).
Engobes are a great option for people who want the look of other clays, but don’t want another clay in their studio because of contamination or messy cleaning. With just two coats, Engobe can turn a red clay body into white or a white clay body into black, so you can have a different clay body every day of the week!
Sgraffito is made by applying two layers of Engobes and 2-3 layers of another glaze and carving through the glaze to create depth and add contrast to your designs. An impactful and dramatic way to use Engobes in your studio.
Engobes are incredibly stable and opaque in design work and work well in a variety of design techniques such as majolica silkscreen marbling and wax resist. The integrity of your design will remain unchanged because engobes will not move or combine with surrounding colors.
The engobes will not adhere to the kiln shelves if 2 coats are applied, heavier use may cause the glaze to flux. Results may vary depending on the kilnwash you applied to your boards, so we recommend testing before use.
Mix Engobes to create something new; use brush strokes to blend colors and create shadows; apply layers without worrying about blending – great for Majolica – add thin lines and details with confidence because Engobes do NOT shift.
