Mayco’s range of glazes for stoneware, including Classic, Matte, Crystal and Gloss, offers a variety of finishes, textures and endless possibilities for glaze combinations. Available in both liquid and drymix.
Classic, Matte, Crystal and Gloss
One of the most distinctive features of Mayco stoneware is that the glazes offer consistent performance and intriguing visual interest. They are especially known for being responsive and easy to use during both application and firing. Mayco Stoneware glazes are user friendly when applying, combining and firing. Many glazes break over textures, revealing secondary colors and shades. The choice of clay body, thickness of glaze applied, firing process and temperature affect the fired results.
Stoneware Classic
Mayco’s Stoneware Classic glazes meet a variety of performance and color selections that range from bright and vibrant to earthy and subdued. Our stoneware glazes offer a variety of finishes, movement and variation. Some glazes are high-gloss, opaque and flat in color, while others have a more complex surface that is varied in both finish and color. The Stoneware Classic glazes also include Opal and Ice (translucent) glazes. These glazes enhance surface details where they meet and merge, work well on a variety of clay types and have a firing range of cone 5-10.
Stoneware Matte
Choose from solid shades or hues that create interesting color variations as they move and break. Our stoneware matte glazes offer a variety of colors and performance characteristics. Some matte glazes are opaque and others semi-transparent and varied. Thickness of application is essential to making Stoneware Matte glazes work for you. Matte glazes work well on a variety of clays and have a firing range of cone 5-10.
Stoneware Crystals
Mayco’s Stoneware Crystal glazes are a unique line of glazes that contain colorful crystals in the glazes themselves that are designed to melt and bloom during firing. These crystals add variety in color, finish and movement to the glazes you already know and love! All of our Stoneware Crystal glazes start with a base glaze; most of the base glazes can be found in our other Stoneware glaze lines. You can find information about the base glazes of all our Stoneware Crystal glazes on the label or in the description on our website
Stoneware Gloss
Mayco’s Stoneware Gloss glazes produce bright, opaque colors with a high-gloss finish. Stoneware Gloss glazes can be used in designs, over the entire surface and are the ideal product for mixability at medium temperatures. The integrity of your design remains unchanged because these glazes are incredibly stable and do not move or combine with surrounding colors. Like all of our pottery glazes, our Gloss glazes work well on a variety of clays and have a firing range from cone 5 to cone 10. Some colors change slightly at higher temperatures.
Dry Glazes
Mayco’s stoneware glazes are available in both liquid pints and dry glazes in 10-lb increments. Dry formulas are added to water and used in buckets for dipping or pouring techniques. Many functional potters prefer dipping to painting for even coverage. The colors and formulas are identical in dry form, minus the added organic gums. Mayco Stoneware Dry glazes (SD is the prefix, it stands for Stoneware Dry) are great for pieces with lots of surface texture and for layering techniques. See the videos below this page for more information.
General use
Stoneware Classic & Matte Glazes
Stir well. Apply to soft-fired bisque (cone 04/06). Apply one, two or three coats depending on desired result. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next. Fire from cone 5/6-10. See label for additional firing information for individual glazes and performance at cone 10.
Stoneware Crystals
Crystal glazes are designed to expand on the surface with dazzling bursts of color. Crystals sink to the bottom of the pot and must be thoroughly mixed before first use and between each coat. Apply two to three coats with a fan or mop brush. While the glaze is wet, use the brush to redistribute the crystals for balanced coverage. Applying too many crystals can cause pinholing or bleeding. Do not place the crystals in the lower third of a vertical piece as they may cause additional movement during firing. See label for additional firing information for individual glazes and cone 10 performance.
Stoneware Gloss
Stoneware Gloss glazes can be used in design, over the entire surface and are the ideal product for mixability at medium temperatures. The integrity of your design remains unchanged because these glazes are incredibly stable and do not move or combine with surrounding colors. See label for additional firing information for individual glazes and cone 10 performance.
Drymix
Dry mixing products: Always wear a NIOSH-approved dust mask when working with dry glazes. Carefully tumble an unopened bag to redistribute the material; sieving is not necessary. Mix a 10-liter bag of dry material in at least 10 liters of water. Stir thoroughly. Add additional water until the desired specific gravity is reached. Preferred specific gravity varies by studio, person and practice. Our recommended specific gravity is between 1.47-1.51. This is for a 1 second dipping time; you may want to mix a lower specific gravity if you layer your glazes or tend to dip longer. Stir well before each use. We recommend using dipping tongs. Immerse the dishes for 1-2 seconds. One coat of Mayco Dry equals 3 coats. Gently shake off excess glaze. Allow glaze to dry before applying additional coats, if desired. To apply Stoneware Dry Crystal glaze, use a cup or ladle to pour the glaze over the item. While the glaze is wet, use a fan brush to spread the crystals evenly; avoid heavy crystals on the bottom 1/3 of your piece. Fire to desired temperature, cone 5-10 (2167°F-2345°F / 1186°C-1285°C). Testing recommended. Choice of clay body, thickness of glaze applied, firing process and temperature affect fired results.
Tip: Keep your bag or note the lot number for when you have questions for our technical team.
Tip:Apply AC-302 Wax Resist to the bottom to easily clean the dry base.
Layering – Glaze Combinations
Endless possibilities for glazes. Artists can achieve incredible finishes with a simple combination of two glazes. Get inspired by the glaze combinations below or feel free to test your own combination!
The technique was achieved by applying two (2) coats of base glaze. Then apply two (2) coats of top glaze and allow the glaze to dry between coats.
*All Cone 6 combinations are fired in oxidation on white stoneware.
*All Cone 10 combinations are fired in reduction on white stoneware.
