🧪 Product Information - Glazes

Our brush glazes are ready to use. Stir well, apply 2-3 coats with a soft brush to bisque-fired work, let dry well and fire according to the indicated temperature. All examples on the site are brushed in 3 coats. In addition to brush glazes, we also have a number of powder glazes. Here you have to make the glaze yourself with water and/or a glue substance if you want to use it as a brush glaze.
Each glaze indicates whether it is suitable for pottery (±1040°C) or stoneware (±1220°C). Note the specifications for each product. This may vary from product to product.
Many of our glazes are food safe after correct application and glaze firing. This is always clearly indicated with the product. If in doubt, please feel free to contact us.
In some cases it does, for example, Amaco’s Celadons. You can mix these together to get different shades of color. We recommend doing small tests first so that you know what the color will look like. It is also possible to combine different glaze lines or glazes from different manufacturers on a work – Layering. In this case you put the layers on top of each other and do not mix the colors beforehand in a pot. It sometimes happens that layering causes the glaze to run or sometimes even peel off. Therefore, it is important to make a test of this before you put it on work.
We strive for accurate photos, but colors may vary depending on screen settings, layer thickness and baking temperature.
On average, 250 ml of glaze covers 1.0 to 1.5 m² at 2 to 3 coats, depending on the type of glaze and application method. This is only an indication!

In the ceramic world, “cone” (also called “pyrometric cone” in Dutch) refers to a system for measuring how much heat ceramics have received in the kiln. This includes not only temperature, but also time and how long the temperature lasts. The cone system is often used in firing ceramics and glazes.

The cone system works with numbers, and they are a bit confusing because lower numbers can bake higher than higher numbers, depending on whether there is a zero in front of them.

  • Cone
  • Approximate Temp (°C)
  • Application
  • Cone 022
  • ± 600°C
  • Gold, decals, lusters
  • Cone 06
  • ± 999°C
  • Pottery, raku
  • Cone 05
  • ± 1046°C
  • Pottery glazes
  • Cone 04
  • ± 1060°C
  • Cookie firing pottery
  • Cone 5
  • ± 1185°C
  • Stoneware glaze
  • Cone 6
  • ± 1220°C
  • Popular stoneware temperature
  • Cone 10
  • ± 1300°C
  • High temperature, porcelain

Caution:
Cone 05 (with zero): about 1046°C → low temperature.
Cone 5 (without zero): about 1185°C → higher temperature.
So cone 05 and cone 5 are very different!

🔥 Important difference

  • Cone 05 = low temperature, often for pottery.
  • Cone 5 = high temperature, for stoneware or stronger glaze.

The heating temperature is the biggest difference. Below is an overview:
Pottery

  • Baking temperature: about 1000-1100°C
  • Characteristics: porous (absorbs water), often lighter weight
  • Color: white, red or cream, depending on the clay used
  • Use: suitable for decorative work, plant pots, crockery that is not used intensively

Stoneware

  • Baking temperature: about 1200-1300°C
  • Characteristics: much stronger and denser, non-porous
  • Color: ranges from gray to light brown or white, depending on the clay
  • Use: ideal for dishes, mugs, bowls and utensils

🧪 Product information - Tools

We recommend a basic set with sponge, pottery needle, good cutting wire, a lomer, a trimming tool and a soft glaze brush. We have nice starter sets from Xiemtools and Mudtools in a handy tube.
Rinse your tools well with water after use, dry them and store them in a dry place. Wooden tools you can occasionally treat with some oil to prevent splitting.
Our brushes vary in softness, size and shape. Round brushes are ideal for details, while flat or fan brushes are good for larger areas. The important thing is to have soft, preferably animal, bristles so that the brush picks up a lot of glaze to apply a nice even coat.

📚 Advice & Technical Assistance

This may be due to too thick application, incorrect temperature or unsuitable clay.Check the instructions per glaze or contact us for advice. Please include a photo of the result, number of coats applied and a firing curve so we can give appropriate advice.
Transparent glaze shows the substrate (ideal over decorations), while opaque glaze fully covers and gives an even color.
