DiamondCore® Tools’ handy shrink ruler is a unique measuring tool for potters to measure clay shrinkage. This flexible, two-sided plastic ruler has four clay crimp measurements to help with projects where exact match is crucial, such as lids for teapots, cookie jars, etc. The photos show both sides of the same ruler. One side shows 6% and 10%, the other side shows 12% and 14%.
USAGE: Using your shrink ruler is easy! Here is a step-by-step guide: Measure the size of the finished piece you want with a standard inch ruler. Find that dimension on the shrink ruler on the scale that corresponds to the shrinkage of your clay. Mark or shape the wet clay workpiece to that dimension. When the piece is finished firing, it will have shrunk to the correct size.
HOW DO YOU MEASURE THE SHRINKAGE OF YOUR CLAY? To use the shrinkage ruler, it is important to know the shrinkage rate of your clay. Generally, the clay supplier can provide this, or you can calculate it using the formula below. Make a rectangular slab of clay measuring 101.6 mm x 304.8 mm and as thick as you plan to make. Using a ruler, measure and cut a 254 mm line in the wet clay. Let the clay dry and then bake the clay. Fire the slab to the final firing temperature. Measure the length of the same line again with the normal ruler. Use the formula below to solve for S. S=(1-F/M)x100 M=length of line in the original wet clay platform with a ruler (10″) F=length of line in the finished clay platform (with regular ruler) S=percentage shrinkage
