Wrought Iron creates an intermittent, mottled black gloss-matte finish reminiscent of high-fire oil-spot glazes. Normally oil-spot glazes are applied thickly and require some reduction during firing to achieve the oil-matte effects; Wrought Iron does the job with only two coats in a cone 6 firing.
Cone 10: The color changes to a dark metallic gray.
TIP: The thinner the layer, the browner the glaze. The thicker the layer, the blacker the glaze. This glaze is not completely matte, but will have a matte finish with variation of gloss. Due to the high manganese content, there is a chance of bubbling/cratering on a speckled clay.

One of the most distinctive features of Mayco’s stoneware is that the glazes offer consistent performance and intriguing visual interest. They are best known for their responsiveness and favorability to the user, both in application and firing. Mayco Stoneware glazes are kind to the user in application, layering and firing. Many glazes break over textures, revealing secondary colors and shades. The choice of clay body, thickness of glaze applied, firing process and temperature affect the fired results.
